The Twentieth Annual Balloon Fiesta Symposium and Annual Meeting The Nineteenth Annual Balloon Fiesta Symposium and Annual Meeting took place October 6th-7th, 2008 at the Journal Center Courtyard Marriott in Albuquerque, NM. There was a breakout meeting for the Specialized Technician Programs, Tuesday, October 7th in the afternoon. The meeting was a success and covered a broad range of topics.

The meeting had the following speakers:

• Alex Spyropoulos, MD, FACP, FCCP discussing CHEST/ACCP 2008 guidelines on anticoagulation bridging
• Randy Adair, DO and Rachel Hroncich, PharmD discussing VTE prophylaxis and pharmacy driven programs to improve rates of prophylaxis
• Jess Benson, PharmD from UNM Poison Center, presenting in the tech breakout session
• Lourdes Cuellar, PharmD, discussing bridging the gap between Health Literacy and Cultural Competency 
• Jeremy Gleeson, MD, giving a Diabetes Update
• Chris McFarland, PharmD,  and Jennifer Mariani, BA, Quality Consultant at UNM Hospitals, giving an update on Core Measures.
• Chris Herndon, PharmD, discussing pain management
• Douglas Postels, MD, with Presbyterian Medical Group, presenting on Anticonvulsants
• Tom Torres, RPH, giving an update in the technician breakout on sterile products
• And President-Elect, Ernest Dole, PharmD, Melanie Dodd, PharmD, Joe Anderson, PharmD from UNM College of Pharmacy, and Dale Tinker providing a legislative update
• Lisa Leonard, MD presenting on Women’s Health topics, and
• NMBOP Inspectors providing a law review

NMSHP Spring Meeting

The Spring Meeting took take place on Saturday, April 12th, 2008 in Albuquerque, at Embassy Suites Hotel and Spa on  1000 Woodward Place. The meeting was successful and we want to give a large THANK YOU to Scott Jacobsen and McKesson for sponsorship.

Great speakers such as Stu Lavine, Allison Burnett, Tom Swanson, and Mark Holdsworth gave interesting and stimulating presentations. Thanks to the speakers as well.

Our membership year runs from July 1 to June 30. New members who join at other times during the year will receive a credit on their renewal the following year.

University of New Mexico pharmacy students are invited to become NMSHP members simply by filling out the Student Membership Application provided. There is no charge for this one-year membership, but we need your address in order to include you in our mailings.
